The UK is gradually phasing out fluorescent lamps. This is part of legislation that aims to reduce environmental harm and promote energy-efficient lighting. Ayjay can support you to make the changes needed.

From September 2023 changes were introduced by the EU Commission to phase out T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes in the UK. The production of these products has stopped. You may still see them at stockists, but in time replacement components won’t be available. Business owners need to move over to alternative lighting systems to make sure they comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.
Here’s what you need to know and how we can help:
The RoHS directive bans fluorescent lighting because it’s bad for the environment
For decades the good old fluorescent tube has been king – especially in retail. Unfortunately, fluorescent lighting accounts for a huge amount of mercury being dumped into the ground each year.
The ban of fluorescent lighting applies to most UK businesses
In some specific situations – hospitals for example – HPD lamps and special purpose lamps can be manufactured for another 3-5 years. Retailers, commercial property owners, landlords and facilities managers should now be working towards replacing old fittings to comply.
Ayjay can recommend and fit alternatives to fluorescent lighting in your business
LED lighting is the most common alternative to fluorescent lighting. The advantages of this are increased energy efficiency, no hazardous materials and a longer lifespan. All these factors will save you money over time. ATEX lighting solutions are also an option if you work in a hazardous area.
ATEX lighting solutions if you work in an environment with ignition risk
Chemical plants, oil refineries, mines, and certain manufacturing environments require lighting systems that meet stringent safety standards to minimise ignition risks. Their design ensures reliable operation when safety matters, protecting both personnel and property.
Use experienced electrical engineers to make your lighting fit for the future
We’ve been working with electrical lighting systems for decades. We know how to create lighting solutions that work for your business and customers. We have a Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) lamp disposal unit at our Caerphilly site, so all waste products are disposed of in accordance with WEEE regulations.
